Trailing Arbutus or Mayflower...enjoy the Smellgasm
The fragrant May Flowers, whose scientific name is Trailing Arbutus, begin to grow before the trees put out their spring leaves. The May Flower grows close to the ground and has leaves that are fairly round, not glossy and approximately one and a half inches in diameter. The flowers themselves are about a half inch in diameter and are often hidden under leaf litter on the forest floor. The aroma of these flowers is so intoxicatingly beautiful that smelling them will melt you to the ground in a blissful state of “smellgasm”.
We’ll explore on and off trail depending on the location of the walk. As we wander purposefully, we’ll explore the many plants and trees that we find. We’ll keep an eye out for wild edibles/medicinal such as Indian Cucumber, Gold Thread, Mountain Sorrel and more. We’ll take it slow so that we see and experience the depth of the forest.
This trip is a chance to touch, breathe and smell the earth after a winter of snow and ice. The May Flower is a harbinger of spring and ushers in the growing season.
