Finding Your Way

Walking through the forest and mountains with a sense of direction and safety is tremendously rewarding.  Knowing how to find your way will help you feel comfortable in the wilderness.

In this class, we will teach how to use landmarks and the classic tools of map and compass.  The course length varies from a half day to a full weekend.  Topics we’ll cover include the following:

• How to read a map.  Orienting a map to the land.  Traveling with a map and land features.
• How to read a compass.  Using a compass and land features to travel.  Macro and micro ways of following a compass.
• Declination: Map north vs. Magnetic north.
• Orienting a map with a compass.
• Using a compass to figure out where land features are on a map.
• Using a compass to plot a course on a map and obtaining bearings to follow in the field.
• Memorizing the landscape for the return journey.
• Using land features to navigate by.
• Using the sun and time to travel by.
• Using wind direction, cloud travel direction.
